be happy.
The election is over! You may not have the results you were hoping for or any final results at all, but hey, at least the ads have ended.
At church, we are told to “Be happy. God sent His Son to be your Savior.” Or “Be happy. Jesus, the Son of God, is coming back to bring Heaven to Earth.” Or “Be happy. God isn’t finished with you yet.”
All that sounds great, but in the meantime, how are we supposed to live when life disappoints? What do we do when our health fails, our job ends, our spouse gets Covid, the "wrong" guy won the election, or that perfect relationship implodes? And if we are Christians, how are we supposed to respond when those around us are hostile to our faith?
Sometimes it can be hard to be happy.
Paul wrote a letter to encourage the church in Philippi who had reason to be unhappy. The church was being persecuted for their faith, which affected their health, their jobs, and their relationships. Paul was stuck in prison for his faith, which I assume also affected his health, his job since it was pre-zoom meetings, and his relationships pre-Facebook. But Paul wrote with joy, demonstrating that we can be passionate for Jesus and live in joy regardless of the circumstances.
Be happy is the name of our sermon series on the book of Philippians.
I hope you can join us.
